Saginaw Athletic Officials Association

New Officials

Welcome New Officials

MHSAA

This page tells you how to become a member of this association. Please follow the steps below:

As a new official there are a number of things you must do in order to become a registered official with the MHSAA and a member in good standing with the SAOA.

1.  You must contact the MHSAA at 517 332 5046 or click the online registration link to the right. Shortly thereafter the MHSAA will send you an Official’s Handbook.  You will be required to read it, take an open-book written test based on the information in the handbook, and submit it to the MHSAA.

2.  Once the MHSAA informs you that you have passed the test, the next step is to register with MHSAA and pay the proper fees for the sports(s) you wish to officiate. MHSAA fees are $20 per sport registered and a $20 administrative fee.  These fees apply for one school year (July 1 of one year to June 30 of the following year).  Registration fees are due no later than July 1 for the following school year.  The late fee is usually waived for new officials.

3.  Once you have registered with the MHSAA, you need to register with the SAOA by sending the following to the SAOA Secretary/Treasurer:
        Name
        Mailing address
        Email address
        Telephone number(s)
        MHSAA ID number
The sports you would like to officiate

4.  The appropriate SAOA fees for the sports you wish to officiate.  SAOA fees are $10 per sport registered and a $15 administrative fee.  Like the MHSAA registration fees, the SAOA fees are due no later than July 1 for all sports you want to officiate in the following school year.  A late fee may be charged for all new official registrations after July 1

5.  Click on the DUES tab at the top of this page to get the Secretary/Treasurer’s mailing address.

6.  No sports contests will be assigned to any SAOA official until s/he is registered with the MHSAA and the SAOA for the current school year.
